Hockeytown USA Revisited

What has happened to the self-proclaimed Hockeytown USA? Every time I tune into a Wings game I see scores of empty seats, many near ice level. Maybe everyone's using the restrooms or something. Or maybe the charm of having a winning hockey team has worn off a bit. Or it could be bad traffic. Or maybe, just maybe, Detroit isn't the hockey hotbed it claims to be. I bet if you put a mediocre, trap-happy defensive team in the motor city no one would show up. In Minnesota we love boring, sometimes mediocre hockey...well, sometimes at least.

Now as a Wings fan for as long as I can remember, you will get no argument form me that the 'Hockeytown' thing is silly. But honestly Detroit is an original 6 city and Michigan colleges have produced as many if not more NHL's than any other state in the USA. It is not exactly a hockey wasteland either…

If the Joe is a bit empty, I find it hard not to chalk it up to a resurgent NBA team, an auto economy in free-fall and dismal arena...

That's right, you've got the Pistons, Tigers and Lions...well, at least you've got the Pistons and Tigers.
