The New York Rangers don’t exactly have the best track record when it comes to landing big free agents who deliver. Going back through the years they’ve signed the following players to ridiculously large contracts: Wayne Gretzky (at the tail end of his career), Jaromir Jagr (actually a trade, but still a big name), Scott Gomez, Chris Drury and Marcus Naslund. None of these signings lived up to the hype.
So what do they do now? They back up the Brinks truck to Marian Gaborik and sign him to a long-term, expensive contract. Yes, the same Marian Gaborik whose groin was injured last season while playing hacky sack.
Does Marian have tons of talent? Of course he does, but he can’t stay healthy. What will the NY media’s reaction be when Marian sits out some games in Florida because of “soreness?” How will the MSG faithful respond the first time Marian tweaks the groin and misses 25 games? The guy can score, no question about it, but he’s not playing 75 games this season, people. He’ll play around 60 games, score 35 goals and frustrate everyone around him.
You may ask “is this coming from a bitter Wild fan who lost his favorite player and got absolutely nothing in return? Probably.
