I took a look at the NHL Standings this morning and was amazed to see the stinkin' Colorado Avalanche atop the division. How is this possible? Is this not the team that's finished at the bottom of the standings the last couple of seasons? After I cleaned up my spit-up coffee, I took another look. Yes, it is true, the Avalanche are playing good hockey.
Will this last? My guess is no. They are not as good as their record indicates and there is no way Jean-Sebastian Giguire can play at this level on a consistent basis. Having said that, they are clearly better than I thought and will be a competitive team going forward. They are stocked with loads of young, high-end talent and are even getting some quality minutes out of Erik Johnson. Expect them to battle the Minnesota Wild for the 3rd spot in the division.
Fortunately for the Wild, Colorado is not on the schedule for another 2-3 weeks, so hopefully by then the Avalanche will have cooled off a bit.
Quick update on my "Basement Naming Rights": I am in negotiations with a small Asian food delivery giant in the Coon Rapids area. Hopefully I will have an announcement by the weekend or at least some potstickers.
Another update: I should not have drafted Jason Zucker for my fantasy hockey team. Free Zucker!
